RADIO STATION PROFILE:
General Description:
WFIS 1600AM is the Golden Strip's Radio Station. Being the only radio station in this Upstate of South Carolina area of over 50,000+ residents is a responsibility WFIS takes seriously. WFIS provides a full-service community focused format that is heavy on local news, talk, sports, weather, community events and local involvement. It’s a highly successful relationship that dates back 56 years to 1956 when WFIS 1600AM went on the air. Broadcasting, on 1600 AM.  In the late 50's early 60's WFIS 1600AM had a sister station in Winnesboro, SC but ceased broadcasting decades ago.  WFIS 1600AM also had a professional recording studio at the North Main Street Fountain Inn facilities but that has gone silent as well.  In 1960 then owner, Ben Davis bought out the other 7 local investors in the station and then purchased the Tribune Times Newspaper which had moved from Fountain Inn to Mauldin years before the radio station was thought of.  Davis brought the Tribune back to Fountain Inn and co-located it with WFIS radio.  Davis & WFIS 1600AM sold the Tribune Times News paper in 1987 to Multi-Media which was spun off to as we know them now as the largest newspaper in the United States, Ganett Media who currently owns the Greenville News and Tribune Times.  They are currently located in downtown Greenville.  In 1999 WFIS 1600AM was purchased by it's current owner, Joe LaStringer.  In 2009 WFIS 1600AM took it's signal and programming to the world-wide web through online streaming at www.wfisradio.com.  Then in 2010 WFIS added an FM translator at 94.9FM then in August of 2012 the lease was not renewed thus sending WFIS to it's original signal at 1600AM and is still the Golden Strip's ONLY LOCALLY OWNED Radio Station.  On May 3, 2013 WFIS was sold to Timeless Media Inc of Burnsville, NC!  The future of WFIS is bright, innovative & exciting under this new company!   December 31st 2013 at noon WFIS said it's goodbyes to the airwaves to the Golden Strip Community!  In mid January 2014 WTZQ 1600am Hendersonville, NC will go from 1,000 watts to 5,000 watts of daytime power and will cover the Golden Strip in the daytime!
